The health department says 57 people have been diagnosed with the highly infectious airborne illness since the start of the year.

Sixteen new cases have been reported since May 1.

Several children were so ill that they needed hospital treatment.

Two Melbourne health care workers have also been diagnosed with measles this week and people who have returned from overseas travel have also been affected.
